HACE and The Food Trust collaborated to host the Centro de Oro Night Market on Saturday, September 16, 2023 (5pm-10pm) at 5th Street & Lehigh Avenue. The roads were closed to traffic on 2700-2800 N. 5th Street as we celebrated community with various food trucks, live music and dance performances, a karaoke competition, and walking tours at 5pm, 6pm, and 7pm facilitated by Experience Eastern North.

As part of the event, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia led a bike tour from Broad & Oxford.

Awarded Wells Fargo Mini-grant

+$5,000
In 2019, after 2 years of engagement and feedback from the community, APM released their updated Strategic Neighborhood Plan. In Spring 2020, APM received implementation funds from the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation to follow the plan and implement projects. As part of the implementation plan, APM established the Eastern North Community Mini-Grants Program that will fund projects in the community led by community members, groups, and partners. We were invited to apply and awarded a grant to continue our tour work.

Community Development Workshop is the capstone course in the Community Development major offered at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University. The course is taught by Dr. Lynn Mandarano. Tour routes were developed by students in collaboration with community partners as noted.

Over a three-year period, students in the Community Development Workshop course examined the changing landscape of Germantown Avenue, Lehigh Avenue, and North 5th Street neighborhoods from 1950 onward, with the students emphasizing the disparity between a change in population, infrastructure, and neighborhood trends.

With the information gathered, students developed historic posters, maps, brochures and a website for three walking tours that profile the area’s past vibrancy and cultural identity. The exhibition includes a handful of printed posters and maps of notable sites on each walking tour.

Gabriela Sanchez hired as consultant to train residents as storytellers

The pandemic made us pivot to a virtual class and showcase.
On Friday, July 24th we held a showcase of community storytelling based in the experiences of Eastern North Philadelphia residents. For several weeks, neighbors had undergone a storytelling skill-building series to elevate neighborhood voices and prepare them to lead local tours that shine a spotlight on the rich arts and culture of their community. As a culminating celebration, participants shared their stories on a live event via Zoom and Facebook.
